"I’ve been getting more sleep (almost 8 hours every day). I went from needing anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour to fall asleep to about 15 minutes."

Steve Rainville, CEO @ CYDEF

former Associate Partner @ IBM

Where he was...

Here’s the reality: I’m a tired, overweight 50-year-old who is running out of steam to accomplish everything I want. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but I need to get off the hamster wheel.

I spent my life working hard, often working10-16 hours/day. When I wasn’t working, I was thinking about working.

I’ve spent most of my career stressed, in firefighter mode, going from client to client and project to project without a real sense that I was making a lasting impact.

Prioritizing work did provide positive results. But unfortunately, that success came at the expense of my personal life. I was regularly away on business trips for 1-2 weeks at a time. Combined with time zone differences, it doesn’t make it easy to keep a family together.

As a result, I missed out on many experiences with my sons and my family. I missed the first days of school, helping with homework, and playing outside. In the end, we separated.

Growing a start-up is a marathon. A successful marathoner puts lots of time into building stamina and perseverance in training for new goals. I know that my team needs a clear-headed, focused leader with a handle on vision and objectives. However, I don’t see how I could achieve those marathon goals on 4-5 hours of sleep a day, a bad diet, and no exercise.

I want to be “better” at everything I am: father, spouse, friend, and CEO. Today, I want to set a different kind of example for my 17 and 20-year-old sons. They’re thinking about the future and where it might lead. As parents, we always ask ourselves, “How do I guide them and minimize the chances they don’t repeat my mistakes?”

Where he is now.

Enhanced Mental Clarity: When I started the program, I felt overwhelmed, and my priorities changed depending on the day’s emergency. After the program, the brain fog lifted, and I gained clarity on my core priorities. Having clear objectives increased my performance and productivity.

Improved Sleep Quantity and Quality: Before starting the program, I rarely went to bed at a consistent hour. I waited to be tired, but that depended on what I ate, how stressed I was, and the time I spent in front of a screen. I’d been on that cycle for most of my professional career (30 years!). I went from needing anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour to fall asleep to about 15 minutes. I’ve essentially gained 30-45 minutes every day for sleep. Imagine having fewer mornings of “ugh, it’s going to be a long day” to “Alright, let’s do this!”. I have the mental energy to do the job with less effort.

Optimized Nutrition: I’ve lost 20 pounds so far. I’m more conscious about my choices, and those choices are becoming easier every day.  It’s not about dieting but understanding how my body will respond to different types of food.

Increased Concentration:  The constant stream of information means non-stop notifications during the day.  As we give in to these distractions: checking email every 10 minutes, having notifications pop up in the background… the synaptic connectivity within the brain to override these distractions gets weakened. With any addictive behaviour, we must go through a process to rewire the brain, create new neuronal connections for deeper, longer concentration, and cement new habits. It does take time, and working through the program with Portia was essential: she held me accountable.

Increasing Efficiency and Effectiveness: Reducing distractions and improving performance and productivity have given me time, which is what I needed to be able to free up time to think. It’s challenging to step away when you’re always in the trenches as you feel there’s always a fire to control. However, I’ve gone from having 15-20 minutes without distractions to 90 minutes. That’s a 450-600% improvement! Priorities and productivity are linked, as I’ve learned to avoid distractions, enabling me to focus on the most valuable work that will help me achieve my objectives.

"It’s a 180-degree transformation...I’m more productive and focused. I feel less stressed when under pressure, and it improved my confidence in accomplishing my goals... leading to a 4X increase in revenue." -Steve
